Overview

Designed as the complementary gateway for S8500/S8700/10/20-based media server solutions, the G650 offer the features, scalability, and system uptime that enterprises require for mission-critical telephony applications.

The G650 Media Gateway features an 8U high, 14-slot chassis that can be installed in industry standard EIA-310 19", 24", or 600 mm ETSI open or closed racks. The G650 can accommodate a range of analog, digital, ISDN, and IP (over the LAN) phone station configurations, with voice transport options over IP, analog, TDM, or ATM. Available dual redundant, load-sharing power supplies with AC/DC inputs provide enhanced system reliability. For scalability, up to five G650 Media Gateways can be stacked together using a TDM/LAN cable and a built-in connector in the back of the chassis to form a high-capacity port network.

For call control, the G650 Media Gateway connects to an external S8500 or S8700 Media Server over an IP link using the TN2312BP IP Server Interface (IPSI). For mission-critical applications, G650 port networks can be configured for IPSI duplication, which provides fault-tolerant duplicated control paths to the media server. This feature introduces a high-availability option for enterprises with existing mission-critical voice systems that want to migrate to an IP transport solution without compromising system reliability and availability.

Features and Benefits:

  • Supports multi-protocol environments where enterprises have a requirement for concurrent support of TDM and IP-based telephony.
  • Provides an evolutionary approach to mixed TDM/IP or IP telephony for enterprises with traditional TDM-based infrastructures to provide greater ROI by leveraging their existing investments.
  • Provides a standard migration and expansion platform for all existing Avaya TN-style Media Gateways that enables the easy integration of voice and data infrastructure over a standard 19-inch data rack.
  • Supports a variety of connectivity and availability options, allowing for easy integration into existing voice networks.
  • Support for T.38 Fax and Modem over IP so that non-IP communications can travel over IP telephony links.

Technical Specifications:

  • Physical: Dimensions (H x W x D), Weight — 360 mm x 480 mm x 560 mm (14" x 19" x 22"), Weight: 16-18 kgs (35-39 lbs)
  • Connectivity Support: Configuration Design Considerations — Traditional Center Stage, ATM Center Stage, Direct Connect, and IP Connect.
  • Port Networks: Growth for existing networks — The G650 can be added for growth to networks with S8700 IP Connect and Multi-Connect.
  • TN Circuit Packs Supported: TN Packs Supported — The G650 supports most of the current station, trunk and IP interface circuit packs.
  • Value Proposition: The G650 Media Gateway and IPSI (TN2312BP) IP Server Interface provide the primary Avaya gateway offer with Communication Manager 2.0 (and above) and S8500/S8700 Media Server solutions focused on mid and large-sized enterprises.

G650/S8500

The G650/S8500 offer is positioned between the S8300/G700 and the S8710 or S8720/G650 in terms of capacity and scalability. It provides an IP Connect solution that supports up to 2400 endpoint (TDM or IP) and 800 trunks, and will be targeted towards medium-sized enterprises. For new deployments, this offer provides a cost-effective IP-connect solution for enterprises that would have traditionally deployed a standard availability DEFINITY ECS Server SI or CSI configuration. The G650/S8500 offer is also targeted for some larger Enterprises that would have traditionally deployed standard availability DEFINITY ECS G3 R configurations with SCC1 or MCC1 gateways.

As a migration offer, the G650/S8500 is positioned for enterprises with existing direct-connect DEFINITY ECS R, CSI and SI configurations using SCC1 or MCC1 gateways that are expanding but would like an alternative to a Center-Stage Switch (CSS) deployment.

As an upgrade offer, the G650/S8500 is targeted at growing enterprises with existing DEFINITY ONE and IP600 configurations that would like to expand to an IP Connect solution with greater scalability and availability.

G650/S8710 or S8720

The G650/S8710/20 offer is positioned for enterprises that require the maximum in scalability, availability, and configuration support. For new deployments, the G650/S8710/20 introduce duplex and high-availability options to IP Connect configurations, providing Enterprises that would have traditionally implemented a duplex or high–availability DEFINITY ECS R configuration with an IP Connect alternative that provides an equivalent level of availability and equal or greater scalability.

The G650 can also be introduced into existing S8700/10/20 Multi-Connect configurations (upgraded to Communication Manager 3.0+) as an expansion gateway that can be integrated into a CSS/ATM environment supporting duplex/high/critical availability configurations, while providing the following benefits:

  • More efficient cabinet space usage for critically duplicated systems with dense trunk configurations
  • Redundant, load sharing power supplies that positively affect “TN” circuit pack life and overall system availability
  • Transition to a 19” rack mount form–factor that is consistent with a convergence architecture

Competitive Positioning

Competitor: Cisco

Competitor Product: ICS7750 and VG200

Reason 1 to Replace: Cisco's weaknesses include: lack of applications (telephony features — functions, messaging, unified communications, contact center); lack of «true» survivability; closed and proprietary solution (Cisco VoIP only works with Cisco routers and switches); and Cisco VoIP products usually require a complete and total network upgrade to make them work.
